DESCRIPTION

ÁNGEL ORCAJO (Madrid, 1934).
"Residues in the silver and the tower of Babel", 1997.
Mixed media on panel.
Signed and dated on the lower right. Signed on the back.
Measurements: 162 x 165,5 cm; 244 x 247 cm (frame).
The allusions to the history of the Tower of Babel are recurrent in the work of Angel Orcajo, who introduces this element as an indicator of the egocentrism of the human being. The work, as indicated on the back of the painting, takes as a reference the painting by Pieter Brueghel the Elder in 1563, which is currently part of the collection of the Museum of Art History in Vienna.
Artist belonging to the Spanish school of the second half of the twentieth century. Orcajo is a key author of the postinformalist painting of the sixties and seventies, to which he mainly contributed the iconography of the city. He is represented at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Salvador Allende in Chile, Columbia University in New York, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Municipal de Bellas Artes in Santander, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid and Seville, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the Amadora Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon, the CGL collection in Rome, the Museum of the Galician People in Santiago de Compostela, the Contemporary Art Collection of the University of Granada and The Balvenie space in Dufftown, Scotland, as well as in numerous private collections.
