JESÚS APELLÁNIZ, (Vitoria, 1897 - 1969).

Jesús Apellániz was one of the main exponents of the Alava landscape painting of the 20th century. A disciple of his brother Domingo and of Díaz de Olano, he was trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vitoria, and later continued his studies at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. When he was only twelve years old, he organized his first individual exhibition in a store in Vitoria. He lived for ten years in Paris, during which time he also showed his work in various German, Belgian and Italian cities. In 1928 Apellániz returned to Spain and settled in Guipúzcoa, whose landscapes he portrayed countless times. Meanwhile, he continued to exhibit outside our country, both in Europe and in the United States. In 1948 he returned to his native Vitoria, where he died in 1969. After his death, the School of Arts and Crafts of Vitoria dedicated a tribute exhibition to him, which was repeated in 2006 at the Raquel Recio Gallery in the same city. Apellániz is represented in Spanish, European and American collections, as well as in the Fine Arts Museum of Alava and the Art and History Museum of Zarautz (Guipúzcoa).
