Vicente Nicolau began his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, working also in the studio of the famous painter Ignacio Pinazo. From 1880 he became known thanks to the exhibitions held by the Sociedad Recreativa "El Iris" of Valencia and also in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, where he won the third medal in 1884 with his work "La visión de fray Martín, which is inspired by the canto I of the poem by Gaspar Nuñez de Arce. Promoter of Valencian art. Like other contemporary artists, he was inclined to regionalist costumbrismo themes and genre scenes, although it is true that in parallel he also cultivated history painting. During the last years of his life he lived in Buenos Aires (Argentina), where he was also very well known.
