Bernardo Ferrándiz is considered one of the most important Valencian painters of his time, next to Sorolla or Degrain. Ferrándiz began his pictorial training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, as a disciple of Francisco Martínez. His creations show his inclination for genre and everyday matters. In this sense, one of his most impressive paintings is El Viático dado a un mendigo moribundo, thanks to which he was awarded a scholarship by the Diputación de Valencia to continue his training outside Spain. He traveled through Africa and Italy, more specifically in Rome, and participated in several exhibitions, obtaining honorable mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1860, received the second medal at the Exhibition of 1864 for his work Un alcalde de monterilla and was silver medal in Madrid, 1866.
He joined the San Fernando Academy in Madrid in 1876, where he attended Madrazo's workshop. He had arrived in Malaga in 1868 taking possession of the chair of Coloring and Composition of the School of Fine Arts of San Telmo, after some hard oppositions developed in Madrid, and remained part of this Malaga school until 1878 when he was appointed its Director. He was an inseparable friend of Muñoz Degrain, whom he attracted to Malaga. Among his many disciples were Moreno Carbonero, José Nogales, Blanco Coris, Enrique Simonet, José Denis Belgrano and Pedro Sáenz Sáenz, among others.
He also studied painting in Paris where his artistic education would culminate under the advice of Duret.
