Gustave Lemaitre was born on April 26, 1860 in Marseilles, where he studied Fine Arts before continuing his studies in Paris with Alexandre Cabanel, William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He exhibited every year at the Salon des Artistes français from 1882 to 1913.Gustave Lemaitre left for North Africa and settled in Algiers in 1910, where he exhibited at the Société des Artistes Algériens et Orientalistes until 1921. He won the Marie Bashkirtseff prize.
