BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
AUGUSTE NUMANS (Brussels, 1822-1901).
"Monte Carlo".
Oil on canvas.
Signed.
Measurements: 55 x 61 cm; 70,5 x 84 x 6 cm (frame).
Auguste Numans offers us a carefree view of the city of Monte Carlo, specifically of the maritime stroll in front of the Salle Garnier of Monaco. Passers-by, dressed in fashionable attire, are chatting and strolling in the hot Mediterranean sunlight.
Although little is known about the Belgian painter Auguste Numans, we know that he was a painter, watercolorist and engraver. He was a student at the Royal School of Engraving in Brussels, where he learned metal engraving, and then at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he trained in engraving with Luigi Calamatta (1843-1846) and Paul Lauters. He participated assiduously in the Brussels Salon of 1842 and was present on more than one occasion in those of Paris. At the moment he has work conserved in the British Museum.
