DESCRIPTION

LOUIS BEROUD (Lyon, 1852-Paris, 1930).
"Sketch for the painting To the masters of yesteryear, Salon Carré du Louvre", 1899.
Oil on canvas. Restored

Measurements: 55.5 x 46.5 cm.

The one we are now bidding on is a sketch made by Louis Beroud for his painting "To the masters of yesteryear, Salon Carré Louvre" measuring 638 x 480 cm. The composition shows seven nude women placing wreaths of flowers on paintings hanging on the wall of the Salon Carré of the Louvre. Among these paintings we recognize masterpieces by Rembrandt, Correggio or Guido Reni, among others.

Louis Beroud began his career as an apprentice decorator before joining the studio of the famous Léon Bonnat. As early as 1873, he began exhibiting at the Salon, where his work was recognized and rewarded with medals over the years. As a curiosity, it is known that Béroud did hard work at the Louvre Museum, repairing paintings and drawing inspiration from them. In 1911, when he was trying to appreciate La Gioconda, he noticed it was missing and informed the authorities; the painting had been stolen by Vincenzo Peruggia in complicity with Eduardo Valfierno.
