BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Spanish school; late 19th century.
"Immaculate Conception".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 81 x 50 cm; 91 x 61 cm (frame).
Mary dressed in white and blue (symbols of purity and the concepts of truth and eternity, respectively), appears surrounded by child angels, who have been skillfully modeled in the upper area, flanking the face of Mary. The Virgin's mantle is draped in an interplay in which the long, wavy, silky hair also participates. The Holy Spirit has been omitted, but the ascending movement of the figure is captured by the subtle chromatic shifts. The crescent alludes to Diana's chastity. The Marian iconography of the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception is combined. This new conception becomes during the Andalusian baroque the purest formula of representation of the glory of Mary.
