José Galofre y Coma was a painter who extended his artistic formation in Rome, pensioned by the Board of Trade. The Prado Museum, where his works are preserved, states "History painter and famous portraitist, in the Eternal City he achieved a solid reputation, to the point of portraying the pontiff Pius IX in 1847 and receiving commissions from the king of Sardinia and the emperor of Russia. He returned to Barcelona in 1850 and from there he sent works to the contests of Paris and Madrid. In 1855 he presented his best known painting, "Episodio de la toma de Granada", to the French Universal Exposition. In 1858, he competed in the Spanish National Exhibition with the works "Zoraida perfuming herself in the bath on the banks of the Genil" and "Portrait of a lady", and in 1860 he sent to the same Exhibition "Desposorios del príncipe Adalberto de Baviera" (The Betrothal of Prince Adalbert of Bavaria). As a writer and art critic, he wrote El artista en Italia y demás países de Europa, atendido el estado actual de las bellas artes (1851) and Cartilla elemental de Nobles Artes (1856)".
