Jean d'Esparbès spent his youth in the castle of Fontainebleau, where his father Georges d'Esparbès was curator from 1905 to 19304. He attended classes at the École des Arts Décoratifs, met Auguste Renoir and Pierre Bonnard in Antibes and became friends with Francis Carco, Roland Dorgelès, Gen Paul, Tony Agostini, Frank-Will, Louis Ferdinand Céline and Marcel Aymé. He made his debut at the Salon des indépendants de la Société des artistes indépendants in 1920 and exhibited at the Salon d'automne in 1924.
