John Gleich was dedicated mainly to the painting of landscapes, marine and subjects of figure, as much of customs as orientalist. He also practiced architecture. During his early years he worked as a merchant, so his training was practically self-taught. In 1909 he made a study trip to the East, passing through Sri Lanka and India, where he took sketches from life and made many works inspired by everyday life and the emblematic corners of the area. Gleich lived in Schöneberg, in Berlin, but also in Barcelona, where he produced a large number of canvases with themes of landscapes, seascapes and portraits, as well as several mural decorations, as is the case of the Residencia de Oficiales, in Pedralbes. He showed his work in numerous solo exhibitions, especially in Hamburg. He is represented in the Schöneberg Museum and the MACBA in Barcelona.
