BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

French school; c. 1770.
"Portrait of a gentleman".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 80 x 56 cm; 86 x 59 cm (frame).
This portrait of the XVIII century, attributed to the French school, shows a gentleman of serious countenance and serene, but firm expression. His face, framed by a powdered wig, is typical of the fashion of the time, reinforcing his social status. He wears a red jacket with gold buttons, which is combined with a vest of the same tone, conveying elegance and sobriety. The white shirt with high collar and black tie complement the attire, highlighting the care in the details of his clothing.
The gentleman appears within a painted oval frame, a common resource to suggest depth and emphasize the importance of the sitter. In front of him, a richly draped blue cloth adds dynamism to the composition and contrasts with the warm tones of his clothing, highlighting his figure. This type of scenographic elements was frequent in the painting of the period, giving the portrait a theatrical and solemn air.
In the 18th century, the portrait genre in France reached great relevance, especially in the context of Rococo and Neoclassicism. Portraying nobles, bourgeois and prominent figures of society was a way of preserving their memory, reaffirming their status and projecting an idealized image of themselves. Painters such as Nicolas de Largillière and Hyacinthe Rigaud were famous for this type of work, which not only reflected the face of the sitter, but also his or her social position and aspirations. This genre not only satisfied private needs, but also became a political and cultural tool of the elite, perpetuating their legacy for posterity.
