BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Polish school; c.1833.
"Portrait of a gentleman".
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right area.
Measurements: 60 x 45.5 cm; 68 x 53 cm (frame).
This portrait of a gentleman, painted in 1833, presents a young man with an elegant and confident countenance. His face is framed by dark, slightly wavy hair that falls softly over his forehead. His gaze is firm and directed at the viewer, with expressive eyes that reflect serenity and confidence. The fine, carefully groomed mustache adds a touch of distinction to his face.
The man is dressed with refined sobriety, wearing a black coat with gold buttons and a white shirt buttoned up to the collar. On his shoulders rests a broad gray cloak that adds volume to the composition and suggests his social status. In one hand he holds what appears to be a document or a letter, a detail that could insinuate an intellectual or administrative activity.
The dark, neutral background of the painting allows the protagonist to stand out even more, highlighting the use of chiaroscuro to enhance the depth and character of the portrait. The artist's signature and the year, "1833", appear discreetly in the right corner, adding authenticity and historical context to this work that conveys dignity and presence.
During this period the panorama of European portraiture is varied and broad, with numerous influences and largely determined by the taste of both the clientele and the painter himself. However, this century saw the birth of a new concept of portraiture, which would evolve throughout the century and unify all the national schools: the desire to capture the personality of the human being and his character, beyond his external reality and his social rank, in his effigy. During the previous century, portraiture had become consolidated among the upper classes, and was no longer reserved only for the court. For this reason, the formulas of the genre would relax and move away from the ostentatious and symbolic.
