BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Follower of TIZIANO (Pieve di Cadore, Belluno, Veneto, ca. 1477/1490 - Venice, 1576), 19th century.
"Venus of Urbino".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 77 x 107 cm; 93 x 125 cm (frame).
The painting is a copy of the famous painting "Venus of Urbino", also called "Venus of the little dog", made by Titian around 1538. The work depicts a nude young woman on a luxurious bed inside a Venetian palace. In the background, a young woman is seen rummaging through a cassone or wedding chest while being watched by another lady; the chest seems to evoke the myth of Pandora's box. At the feet of the naked young woman sleeps a little dog, symbol of fidelity.
