Herbert Edwin Pelham Hughes-Stanton was a British painter of watercolors and oils, mainly landscapes. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in November 1913, Academician of the Royal Academy in 1920 and knighted in 1923. He was Officier l'ordre Leopold II[4] and a member of the Royal Watercolour Society from 1909 to 1915 and its President from 1920 to 1936. He was born in Chelsea, London, the son of William Hughes, of Welsh descent, a still life painter, and was educated in Corsham, near Bath. His first paintings were exhibited in 1886; and he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, the Royal Academy (from 1897), the Grosvenor Gallery (from 1887), the New Gallery and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and later at the Fine Art Society. He received gold medals at the Paris Salon in 1907 and 1908. Since 2014, Hughes-Stanton's works are (or have been) in collections including the Tate; the National Gallery of Wales; the National Museum of Buenos Aires; the Royal Museum of Florence; the Museo Moderno, Rome; the Barcelona Museum; the Royal Gallery, Tokyo; the National Gallery of Sydney; the National Gallery of Adelaide; the Melbourne Museum; the Auckland Museum; and the Wellington Gallery; and in the permanent galleries of Manchester, Liverpool, Bradford, Brighton, Aberdeen, and Oldham. [4] A Pasturage among the Dunes, exhibited at the New Gallery, was acquired for the Chantry bequest in 1908. Hughes-Stanton died in Kensington, London, on August 2, 1937. Hughes-Stanton died in Kensington, London, on August 2, 1937, and has a memorial in St James's Church, Piccadilly.
