BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
GASPAR TERRASSA MAS (Palma de Mallorca, 1840-1910)
"A stable".
Oil on canvas.
Signed with anagram in the left margin.
It presents craquelados.
Measurements: 50 x 90 cm; 63 x 103 cm (frame).
The Majorcan Gaspar Terrassa developed a painting of luminist mood in his landscape subjects, but on the other hand he opted for a palette of sober tones in his interior paintings. In this representation of a stable, ochre and earthy tones dominate on which the black body of the donkey is outlined, watering under the attentive gaze of a peasant. The brushstroke is quick and intuitive.
Terrassa studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palma de Mallorca. He then moved to Barcelona, where he lived for a time and exhibited at the Sala Parés on several occasions. He completed his training in Rome, where he was a disciple of Mariano Fortuny. He was part of the first exhibition of the Fomento de la Pintura y la Escultura de Palma de Mallorca in 1876 (documented in "Museo Balear de Historia, Literatura, Ciencias y Artes", number 8, 1876). He practiced mainly landscape and portrait painting.
