BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
After BARTOLOMÉ ESTEBAN MURILLO (Seville, 1617 - Cadiz, 1682).
"Adoration of the shepherds".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 60 x 73 cm; 72 x 87 cm (frame)
This work is a copy, in a smaller format, of the oil on canvas painted by Murillo around 1650, with measurements of 187 x 228 cm, currently preserved in the Prado Museum. It is a work framed within the riberesque production of the Sevillian master, notably marked by tenebrism. It also shows a simple composition, centered in the foreground, and a marked taste for popular human types, features also typical of Ribera's influence. However, there is no lack of the typical features of Murillo's painting, such as the softness of the modeling or certain types that he would repeat in other works, such as the Virgin leaning over the child or the old woman offering a basket of eggs.
There is a copy of the same painting made some years later, in 1668, by Murillo himself. This canvas has approximately the same dimensions as the work of 1650, and is currently preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville.
