DESCRIPTION

Oil on canvas.

Painting of devotional theme, representing the adoration of the shepherds to the Child Jesus in Bethlehem. It is a work of Spanish school, close to the area of influence of Jose Ribera and Murillo. This can be appreciated in the juicy play of light and in the simplicity of the composition, centered in the foreground, showing the taste for portraying popular types. The humble clothing, based on sheep's wool pants and cotton shirts, have been described with narrative will. The faces, with slanted eyes, follow the same physiognomic model, intended to express tenderness and kindness. The sacrificed lamb, next to the cradle, adds a symbolic imprint, alluding to the sacrifice of Christ.
