Painting representing St. William kneeling before a crucifix. His royal attire, with an ermine cloak, evokes his high lineage as Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Toulouse. The ruff that enhances his neck is a distinctive element of the nobility of the Golden Age, while the knight's armor symbolizes his past as a warrior in the service of Charlemagne in the defense of the Frankish kingdom against the Saracens. It is located in a conventual interior, which highlights the moment of his conversion and monastic retreat. In the background, behind a doorway, we can distinguish a soldier with a helmet, possibly a reminder of his former military life, and a servant, which could represent the abandonment of his earthly rank and power.
