DESCRIPTION
Spanish school; XVII century.
"Allegory of charity".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 115 x 155 cm.
Oil on canvas in which an exterior scene is presented where a group of figures congregates in an atmosphere of costumbrista court. In the center of the scene three men are the protagonists of the composition. Two of them, who differ in age, are elegantly dressed, while the other, however, seems to belong to a lower social class. The richly dressed man pounces on the poor man, and the young man, who seems to be a page, remains completely oblivious to this action, resulting in an image of great picaresque.
This painting is part of the Spanish genre painting tradition of the 17th century, which was characterized by its interest in the representation of scenes of everyday life and popular types. The work shows influences from Flemish and Dutch painting, especially in the depiction of interiors and attention to detail. In short, this painting is a representative example of 17th century Spanish genre painting, notable for its realism, dynamism and ability to capture the atmosphere of everyday life. The work offers a fascinating insight into the society and customs of the time, and is a valuable testimony to Spain's artistic heritage.
