BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

French school; beginning of the 18th century.
"The Education of Dionysus".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 128 x 110 cm; 146 x 126 cm (frame).
This painting of the French school of the early eighteenth century represents the education of the god Dionysus by Silenus, a mythological scene that has been recurrent in Western art. The work shows Silenus, the elderly satyr and faithful companion of Dionysus, with a muscular body and partially covered by a red cloak. His bearded face and pointed ears reflect his semi-divine and savage nature. In a paternal attitude, Silenus instructs the young Dionysus, who appears as a plump boy with a cloth around his waist, leaning towards a golden vessel, probably to drink wine, alluding to his future as god of wine and ecstasy.
The composition is organized dynamically, with a strong contrast between light and shadow that highlights the anatomy of the characters. The pictorial technique shows a refined mastery of chiaroscuro and a detailed modeling of the volumes, characteristics of the late Baroque. The texture of the skin, the fluidity of the folds of the cloak and the expressiveness of the faces are elements that show the artist's skill.
The theme is of great importance within the Dionysian iconography, as it represents not only the infancy of the god, but also his initiation into the mysteries of wine and drunkenness, fundamental to his cult in antiquity. The work stands out for its masterful execution, its dramatism and its chromatic richness, making it an excellent example of the mythological art of the time.
