BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
EUGÈNE DELACROIX (Charenton-Saint-Maurice, 1798-Paris 1863) & ALEXANDRE POTHEY (France, 1820-1897).
"The Pieta" from "L'Illustration".
Lithograph.
Measurements: 31 x 44 cm; 46 x 58 cm (frame).
The Metropolitan Museum of New York, who owns an original copy of this work, states "This composition corresponds more with Delacroix's first oil sketch (private collection) for his Pieta than with the final mural executed in Saint-Denys-du-Saint-Sacrement, which does not include the angels and reverses the figurative group". This is a collaboration between the painter Eugène Delacroix and the engraver Alexandre Pothey.
