BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school; XVII century.
"Female bust".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 30.5 x 25 cm; 39 x 33 cm (frame).
This work represents a profile portrait of a young woman, painted with an expressive approach and a masterful use of light and color. The figure, set against a dark background, is lit in a way that highlights the volume of her face, capturing the texture of the skin and the softness of her features. Her expression, slightly melancholic and pensive, is reinforced by the direction of her gaze upward, suggesting a certain spirituality or introspection.
The hair, simply gathered, and the clothing, with soft folds and a delicate pictorial treatment, reinforce the focus on the purity and humanity of the subject. The technique reveals a refined handling of chiaroscuro, characteristic of the Italian school of the 17th century, where dark shades envelop the figure, emphasizing its presence and psychological depth.
The characteristics of the painting indicate that it was probably originally conceived as a sketch from life, captured for a painting with a larger composition of which this would be a character.for the quality of execution, this work can be inscribed within the artistic circle of masters such as Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino), Annibale Carracci and other leading exponents of the Italian Baroque. Guercino is recognized for his sensitivity to emotional expression and his ability to integrate light and shadow in a dramatic manner, while Annibale Carracci marked a revival of classicism with his quest for balance and naturalism. Both artists, along with their contemporaries, played a key role in the evolution of the baroque, a current that emphasized theatricality, emotion and direct connection with the viewer.
This circle of artists not only laid the foundations of the Italian Baroque, but also profoundly influenced the development of later European art, consolidating the importance of technical virtuosity and emotional depth as essential tools in painting.
