BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Viceroyalty school, XVIII century.
"The Flight into Egypt".
Oil on canvas glued to board.
Measurements: 62 x 51 cm; 82 x 71 cm (frame).
The biblical passage of the Flight into Egypt was profusely treated in art and, especially from the seventeenth century, both in the Spanish school and the contemporary Cuzco and Mexican school. In this painting the symbiosis between Christian iconography and human types of local inspiration can be appreciated. Mary, wearing a hat, brings the Child Jesus close to her face, in an extremely loving gesture. They ride the donkey, while Joseph stands guiding them. The scene is set in a clear landscape. In this way, two iconographies coexist in the same image: the episode of the flight and the family picture (the Holy Family). Stylistically, the painting is part of the colonial baroque. Perhaps executed by a Mexican or Peruvian school, a certain influence of the Flemish school can be appreciated.
