BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school; second half of the seventeenth century.
"Madonna in prayer".
Oil on canvas.
Preserves original canvas.
Measurements: 76 x 63 cm; 92 x 78 cm (frame).
The painting shows a Virgin in prayer, a characteristic work of the Italian school of the eighteenth century, distinguished by its sensitivity and focus on spirituality. The Virgin is depicted with a serene face, softly illuminated by a subdued play of light and shadow that emphasizes her pious and devout expression. She wears a golden veil that frames her face, along with a dark mantle that enhances the chromatic contrast with the red dress she wears underneath. Her hands clasped together in an attitude of prayer reinforce the theme of introspection and faith.
The style reflects the influences of the late Baroque, characterized by its emphasis on emotion, dramatic chiaroscuro and detail in the rendering of textures, such as the softness of the veil and the delicacy of the face. This focus on chiaroscuro, inherited from artists such as Caravaggio, serves to direct the viewer's attention to the central figure, generating an atmosphere of recollection and transcendence.
The importance of the style lies in its ability to convey devotion and spirituality. This type of representation was not only an artistic expression, but also a vehicle for religious teaching and meditation, common at a time when art played a crucial role in communicating the values and ideas of the church. The combination of technical beauty and religious symbolism reinforces the emotional and spiritual impact of the work.
