BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school; XIX century.
"Holy Burial".
Oil on brass.
It has frame of the nineteenth century.
Measurements: 29 cm (diameter); 60 x 39 cm (frame).
This Italian painting of the XIX century, made on brass, represents a solemn scene of the burial of Christ. In it, Jesus lies wrapped in a shroud, while he is supported by three figures, probably Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus and a disciple or apostle, accompanied by two women who could be Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. The composition uses dark and golden colors, accentuated by the background that alludes to the rocky landscape of Golgotha, evoking a moment of deep mourning.
The use of golden halos underlines the holiness of the main characters, particularly the figure of Christ. The treatment of the vestments and the dramatic facial expressions reflect the influence of traditional Italian devotional art, which prioritizes emotional narrative and spiritual connection.
In the 19th century, this theme became especially important due to the resurgence of interest in religious art, driven by movements such as Romanticism and the resurgence of Catholicism in Europe. Depictions of the burial of Christ not only reflected a return to spiritual values in times of change, but also an interest in tradition and the search for comfort in faith in the face of the uncertainties of modernity.
