"Franciscan saint".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 74 x 58 cm.
The devotional painting that we show corresponds to the mystical theme characteristic of the Spanish Baroque. The young religious belongs to the Franciscan order, which we recognize by the brown habit with hood. The countenance of the saint looking at the sky with clouded eyes and half-open lips conveys an image of rapture, a spiritual ecstasy that materializes the union of the human with the divine. The author follows a style close to that of Zurbarán, giving great expressiveness to the painting and great intensity to the handling of a contrasted light. This type of work sought to capture the emotional and spiritual intensity of mystical experiences, typical of the religious art of the Counter-Reformation.
