BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Andalusian School; XVIII century.
"The coronation of the Virgin".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 62 x 60 cm; 72 x 70 cm (frame).
This work follows a composition in the form of an inverted triangle, with the three figures of the same size, accompanied by child angels, with the crown as the center of attention, flown over by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, captured foreshortened and frontally. This inverted triangular composition, with the figures of Jesus on the left, Mary and the dove in the center and God the Father on the right was already used in the 16th and 17th centuries by several painters in Spain, among them El Greco (ca. 1592, Museo del Prado) and Velázquez (1641-44, idem). In fact, Velázquez also uses a visual resource that reinforces the idea of the unity of the Trinity, which we also see here: Jesus and God the Father wear identical clothes. El Greco, on the other hand, places them as a mirror image of each other, given that both carry the same scepter placed in the same way, as is the case here. However, Mary appears here kneeling in a praying position, following older models, from the 16th century, which speaks of the diversity of sources typical of the Spanish school of the 18th century.
