Following Correggio's models, 17th century

The Veil of Veronica (or Head of Christ) -of which our panel is a clear follower- is an oil on panel (28,58 x 23 cm) painted by Correggio around 1521, today preserved in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The motif depicted here is the result of the specific moment when, on the way to Calvary, a woman took off her veil to wipe the face of the Messiah with it. The image of the face of Jesus Christ was imprinted on the linen handkerchief, and it was miraculously preserved through the centuries, becoming an object of worship. The woman would later be called Veronica, whose etymology derives from the Latin "verum" (true) and the Greek "eikon" (image).
