BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Lombard School; second half of the seventeenth century.
"Still life of hunting".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
It has seventeenth-century frame with faults.
Measurements: 70 x 96 cm; 93 x 120 cm (frame).
In this canvas the author offers us a still life of hunting rooted in the baroque tradition of the genre, both for its composition and for the chromatic and luminous treatment, the care of the qualities and the loose and impastoed brushstroke. As was the case with many of the Baroque masters, here we see the elements that make up the still life arranged in a disorganized but clear way. Some of them are arranged on a flat surface that runs parallel to the lower margin of the painting, while others are hung. Moreover, following this same tradition, the still life is placed in the foreground, on a neutral and dark background that delimits the space, focusing our gaze on what the painter considers most important. It is worth noting that the hyperbolic descriptions of paintings in classical literature placed great value on mimicry or imitation of the natural world. This challenge helped to explain the elaborate naturalism of still life painting, from its very emergence, as an independent and defined genre, as well as the illusionistic character of some of its earliest examples in the still life school.
The Lombard school is a rarity within Italian painting, because it does not present the characteristics that unify others such as the Roman or Venetian. Thus, within this northern school several sub-schools can be distinguished, centered in the cities of Milan, Genoa, Piedmont, Bologna, Cremona, Modena, Ferrara and Parma. However, the term Lombard school is often identified with the Milanese school.
