BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Majorcan school; XVII century.
"Still life of sweets".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
It presents Repainting and restorations on the pictorial surface.
Measurements: 80 x 98,5 cm.
On a table, they are shown arranged in a certain order, parallel to the base of the canvas, diverse sweets: a wicker basket overflowing with wafers very similar to the painting "Sweets and dried fruits on a table", realized by Yepes between 1600-1635 (at present in the collection of the Prado Museum), two cylindrical wooden boxes, of which they used to have jellies, in fact is enhanced with a glass jar containing honey, located on them, a glass cup, a metal plate with two pieces of nougat, another, smaller, with confectionery overflowing the plate, another with large sugar donuts, and churros and a bun on a paper. All the motifs that appear, are frequent in the still lifes of Tomás Yepes, so the work can be considered a painting that follows the style of the Valencian master, in fact the one in the exhibition Pedro Masaveu Collection. Floreros y bodegones. Mº BB. AA. de Asturias, Oviedo, July-October 1997, curated by: A.E. Pérez Sánchez, a painting very similar to the present one was presented, attributed to a follower of Yepes.
The Mallorcan school of still lifes shows a strong influence of the Valencian school, although it had its own personality and must have enjoyed a certain importance, given the number of works that have survived to the present day. It developed mainly from the late seventeenth century and during the eighteenth century, from the appearance of the figure of Guillermo Mesquida (1625-1747), which will raise the level of Mallorcan painting.
