Son and disciple of Manuel Marqués Carles, and father of the painter José María Marqués Puig, José María Marqués García dedicated himself to landscape, portrait and religious scenes. He began his training at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, and furthered his studies in Madrid, Paris and Rome. He also took part in contests and competitions, notably the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888, the International Exhibition of London in 1898, where he won a gold medal, and the International Exhibition of Barcelona in 1929. During the last decade of the 19th century he was placed among the most important names of the time by the critics.
