The Impossible is a 2012 Spanish drama film directed by J. A. Bayona, starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland. Based on true events, it tells the story of the Belon family, who survived the devastating tsunami of December 26, 2004 in Southeast Asia.

The family, consisting of Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three children, were vacationing at a hotel in Thailand when the giant wave swept through the resort. Maria and her eldest son, Lucas, are separated from the rest of the family, and after several vicissitudes and serious injuries, they manage to reunite, but the situation is complicated when they lose a child named Daniel. In a makeshift hospital, the family struggles to survive and reunite amidst the chaos, while Henry, who has also survived the tsunami, searches for his wife and children.

The film is notable for its realistic depiction of disaster, the anguish of separation and survival under extreme conditions. It was both a box-office and critical success, and received 14 Goya Award nominations, winning five, including Best Director for Juan Antonio Bayona.
