DESCRIPTION

ANTONIO LÓPEZ GARCÍA (Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, 1936).
"Membrillos y rosa", from the Suite Olympic Centennial.
Lithograph on Vélin d'Arches paper, 270g, copy 220/250.
Signed and justified by hand.
Measurements: 63 x 90 cm.
A painter and sculptor, Antonio López studied between Madrid, at the San Fernando Academy, and Italy, where he travelled thanks to a scholarship. During his student period he formed, together with other artists such as Enrique Gran, Amalia Avia or Lucio Muñoz, what has come to be known as the Madrid School. After finishing his studies, in 1957, he made his individual debut in Madrid. Since then he has been shown repeatedly in galleries in Europe, the United States, China and Korea, and in 1993 the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid devoted an anthological exhibition to him. He is a member of the San Fernando Academy, and his awards include the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts and the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts. In 2008 the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston devoted a monographic exhibition to him, and in 2011 the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao will do the same. He is represented at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Fundación Juan March and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, among others.
The Olympic Suite is composed of 50 lithographs and serigraphs chosen to represent various contemporary artistic trends. It was published to commemorate the first centenary of modern Olympism. The chosen artists are defined by diverse pictorial movements and trends.
