Per Kirkeby was a Danish painter, sculptor, film-maker and writer. He lived and painted in a studio in Copenhagen, and had his home on the island of Læsø between Denmark and Sweden. He began painting at the age of fourteen. Slightly dyslexic, he quickly preferred to express himself through drawing. He studied natural sciences at the University of Copenhagen and participated, from 1958 to 1965, in numerous scientific expeditions as a geologist.
In 1971, he was National Commissioner representing Denmark at the Paris Biennale.
He participated with sculptures in the new Copenhagen Opera House, which opened in 2005.
He published poems and novels, and entered the Danish Academy in 1982. He admired the architecture of the Maya, Cézanne, Manet, Madame de Staël and Eugène Leroy.
He was especially known in Germany, England and Spain, where museums devoted retrospectives to him and where he was recognised as one of the most important European artists.
