Founded in 1851, William Henry Harling specialized in the manufacture of drawing instruments, with a factory at Grosvenor Works, Hackney, London EC.
An alidade is a fixed or movable rule carrying at each end, perpendicularly, a pinnula or foresight, and used in surveying to direct visuals.
