BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Pair of candlesticks; France, Louis Philippe period, c. 1840.
Gilded bronze.
Measurements: 60 x 21 x 21 cm (x2).
Pair of candlesticks of six lights each in gilded bronze with stems as scrolls, decorated with ovals and gadroons. The candlesticks are elevated at the base by legs in the form of turnstones under which rests a plinth. The shaft is supported by a set of winged victories that serve as a base.
We can understand the Louis Philippe as an eclectic period of transition from the heavy and sumptuous forms of the Empire to the historicism and industrialization of Napoleon III. Still with an artistic will and good taste towards beautiful ornamentation, whose purpose was to make the rooms of the growing bourgeoisie more comfortable, there is a concern for aesthetics, fine finishes, monumentality and brilliant gilding, a set that makes this pair of chandeliers is an exceptional work.
