This centerpiece, originating in France in the late 19th century, exemplifies the opulence and refinement characteristic of the period. The piece is composed of a circular gilt bronze base, ornamented with a decorative border of floral and geometric motifs in enamel. The center of the base features a section of veined onyx, which adds a touch of natural elegance and contrasts with the luster of the bronze.
At the heart of the base is a gilded bronze figure of a putto or lovebird, sculpted with remarkable anatomical detail and expressive delicacy. The putto, with its outstretched wings, seems to effortlessly support a central stem that rises upward. This stem, also in gilded bronze, is decorated with enamel motifs that repeat the designs of the base, creating a visual harmony throughout the piece.
The stem culminates in an onyx cup, whose shape evokes that of a chalice or tulip. The cup is surrounded by a gilded bronze neck, adorned with enamel that continues the decorative theme of the rest of the piece.
This centerpiece is a testament to the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized the production of luxury objects in late 19th century France. The combination of gilt bronze, enamel and stone, along with the delicate sculpture of the putto, make this piece an outstanding example of the eclectic and refined style that prevailed at the time.
