Original Dictaphone, manufactured in England in the first third of the 20th century. The trademark "Dictaphone" was registered by the Columbia Graphophone Company of the United Kingdom in 1907, ahead of the Ediphone of Edison Records. Subsequently, the term (dictaphone) became generic to allude to these devices, especially to the historical versions that used phonograph cylinders as recording medium (such as the original dictaphone we show), which was common from the late nineteenth century until the first half of the twentieth century, when vinyl records replaced them. The success of these devices in the first decades of the XX century was such that in 1923 the company Columbia Graphophone, main manufacturer of these devices, separated its dictaphone division with the name Dictaphone under the direction of C. King Woodbridge, brother-in-law of George Albert Kimball.
