Gladiator is an epic film directed by Ridley Scott in 2000 that tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), a Roman general who, after being betrayed and seeing his family killed, becomes a slave and gladiator. As he fights in the arena, Maximus seeks to avenge the death of his family and the betrayal of Emperor Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix), who usurped the throne of Rome after murdering his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Throughout the film, Maximus fights for his honor, for justice and to restore Rome's legacy.
The film, which combines action, drama and themes of revenge and loyalty, was acclaimed for its direction, performances and visual effects, and won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.
