BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Barometer; Kobenhavn, Denmark, late 18th century.
Carved, gilded and polychrome wood.
It has flaws and needs restoration.
Signed B. Molinari.
Measurements: 103 x 46 x 16 cm.
This late 18th century barometer, made in Copenhagen (København), Denmark, is a sample of neoclassical aesthetics, adorned with ornamentation loaded with symbolism. The design stands out for its architectural structure, combining geometric and decorative elements. The piece is richly decorated with golden details that contrast with the light, painted wood background. At the top is a figure of a swan on its nest, a symbol often associated with elegance, purity and rebirth. On either side rest two figures of golden roosters, depictions often evoking vigilance and pride, on their own delicately crafted nests.
The barometer is composed of two main instruments: the thermometer in the upper central part, surrounded by garlands and vegetal decorations, and the circular barometer in the lower part; on its dial one can read inscriptions in Latin and Danish indicating the weather conditions, a typical characteristic of the instruments of that period, which combined functionality with aesthetic refinement.
