Architectural models like this truss (truss that supports the roof of a building) were made by the "Compagnons du Devoir", French apprentices or master craftsmen, to apply for a title of their respective guild. After a period of training in France or Europe in general, these craftsmen made increasingly complex models. Before ending their educational travels and settling in a city, they were required to submit a masterpiece or Piece de Maitrise. And if approved, they were entitled to open their own store or workshop.
