Commemorative medal of Alfonso XII of Spain, "The Peacemaker", (Madrid 1857-1885), was King of Spain from 1874 to 1885. His reign marked the end of the First Republic, which gave way to the period known as the Restoration. It was characterized by the attempt to consolidate the monarchy and institutional stability. He approved the Constitution of 1876, put an end to the Carlist conflicts and signed the peace with Cuba, thus earning his nickname. The king's life ended when he was only twenty-seven years old, being a victim of tuberculosis, but achieving great popularity. His successor was his posthumous son Alfonso XIII.
