During the eighteenth and nineteenth century social gatherings in public events were the appropriate context for the ladies to show their new fashion acquisitions, of which the fans were the perfect complement. These became very important not only because of their usefulness, but also because the ladies developed a whole language around the use and arrangement of the fan.
