BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Cornucopia; 19th century.
Carved and gilded wood.
It presents faults in the gilding.
It has a mirror from a later period.
Measurements: 90 x 60 cm.
The one that we present here presents a mixtilinear frame, with mouldings finished off in stylised vegetal elements. At the lower end, the sides and the top, these mouldings are enriched in profusion. Cornucopias were rich mirrors to which candle holders were added so that the light from the candles would be multiplied by being reflected on their surface. They were particularly popular in the Baroque period, during the 17th and most of the 18th century. As they were pieces of representational furniture, they were made of richly carved and gilded wood, and their frames were decorated with a multitude of delicate relief motifs.
