On October 19, 1868, by Decree of the Provisional Government formed after the overthrow of Isabel II, the peseta was born in Spain as a monetary unit. The figure of Hispania was chosen to represent "the fatherland", which already appeared on Hadrian's coins minted in 136 AD.
The sestertius of Hadrian shows the bust of the emperor on the obverse and Hadrian standing raising his hand towards Hispania on the reverse, holding palm and patera on an altar.
