BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Portable desk or colonial box. China, 18th century.
Rosewood and huanghuali.
Measurements: 19,5 x 53,5 x 38 cm.
Rectangular box with curvilinear drum, made of fine woods (rosewood and huanghuali) of remarkable quality and excellent patina. The lid and base have undulating moldings that generate a harmonious visual rhythm that elegantly dialogues with the walls of the cabinet. The workmanship evidences a synthesis between European functionality and Chinese aesthetic sensibility, typical of high-end colonial furniture. The interior is carefully compartmentalized: it includes a pull-out pencil and document box, and a lower drawer that provides additional space, signaling the practical use of the unit as a portable travel desk or light office. All components are integrated with a sense of order and spatial rationality characteristic of 18th century design. The iron fittings, handles and pulls present sober and resistant forms. This piece, due to its formal refinement and careful construction, is part of the cabinet furniture intended for private administration or correspondence tasks, possibly owned by a wealthy merchant, a viceroyalty official or a lawyer.
The so-called huanghuali or Chinese rosewood is a tree native to Fujian, Hainan, Zhejiang and Guandong. It produces an aromatic wood of excellent quality. Its colors range from reddish brown to golden yellow, and together with the appearance of abstract patterns in the longitudinal cuts, make it an exceptional and exclusive wood.
