BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Staircase model; Italy, second half of the nineteenth century.
Iron and carved wood.
Measurements: 130 x 63 x 34 cm.
This model of a staircase made of iron and oak wood is characterized by its marked inclination. It consists of a total of 10 steps that, starting from the third one, change direction.
Architectural models like this one were made by the "Compagnons du Devoir", French apprentices or master craftsmen, to apply for a title of their respective guild. After a period of training in France or Europe in general, these craftsmen made increasingly complex models. Before ending their educational travels and settling in a city, they were required to submit a masterpiece or Piece de Maitrise. And if approved, they were entitled to open their own store or workshop.
