Pair of candlesticks, possibly of Central European origin and dating from the late nineteenth century, represents an exceptional work of goldsmithing in sterling silver 900, embossed and chiseled with great skill.
Each candelabra stands on a solid triangular base with curved profiles and scrolls, decorated with vegetal motifs in relief, a distinctive feature of the late rococo style. The ornamentation abounds in scrolls, acanthus leaves and floral garlands that add dynamism and richness to the piece.
The central shaft, with sinuous contours and elegant verticality, presents a delicate chiseled work that combines smooth surfaces with profusely decorated areas, creating hallmarks of texture and brightness. From the upper node, there are eight curved arms arranged in two levels, with a symmetrical arrangement that brings balance and harmony to the composition. The arms, profusely decorated with vegetal motifs, culminate in scalloped coils that hold the lampshades for the candles.
At the top, the figure of a lady with a spear stands on a pedestal as a finial, possibly alluding to an allegory of justice or strength, typical attributes of nineteenth-century symbolic language.
The embossing and chiseling technique used reveals the goldsmith's ability to model the silver with meticulousness, creating effects of volume and depth that enhance the ornamental richness. This pair of candlesticks, probably intended for the decoration of an aristocratic residence or for religious ceremonies, reflects the historicist taste of the time, which reinterpreted the forms of the past with refinement.
