DESCRIPTION
Bed with canopy. Spain, XVI century.
In wrought iron partially gilded.
Measurements: 270 x 152 x 240 cm.
Spanish wrought iron bed with canopy, an exceptional example of the mastery of the blacksmiths of the sixteenth century. Its design combines structural solidity with a decorative richness typical of the Renaissance period, with late Gothic influences in its architectural and ornamental forms. Following the traditional structure of the baldachin, it consists of four vertical uprights that support an upper frame, intended to hold curtains or fabric canopies. Its arched feet provide visual lightness and a certain stylization to the structure, contrasting with the robustness of the iron. The foot rail alternates geometric motifs forming triangles with moldings and smooth areas, adding dynamism to the composition. The headboard has balusters that alternate patterns, turned and textured sections. The solutions are decorative while providing strength. Above the ceiling, pinnacles made of leaves and small flowers inspired by Gothic architecture stand out, emphasizing the verticality and magnifying the elegance of the whole. The synthetic plant motifs are typical elements of the Hispanic tradition of wrought iron work, reflecting the influence of nature in the decorative arts. These forms are also reminiscent of the ornamentation of Renaissance grilles, such as those found in churches and palaces of the period.
